What is Historic Gift?

Historic Gift is an online store that specializes in unique, personalized gifts inspired by historical events, documents, and artifacts. We offer a wide range of products including historical maps, newspapers, and other memorabilia, perfect for any history enthusiast.

Historic Maps

How do I choose my map?

Once on the Historic Map product, click 'Choose your map' which will open our map-viewer page. You can then navigate through the map or search your chosen location in the search box. A town name or postcode is a great place to start!

You can then customise your map by:

  • changing the map year 
  • horizontal or vertical
  • zoom in and out or dragging your map into the right place 

After you have your chosen map frame, click 'Select' in the bottom left to save your map specifications - Add to cart and checkout.

Why are there lines on mu chosen map?

Each historical map has been carefully scanned in high definition by The National Library of Scotland, as old maps were originally printed on paper the lines that you see are simply lines between pages or folds.

Can I have a custom size print?

Yes, we can print bespoke maps, just get in touch with our helpful team and we can give you a quote. 

What paper is my map going to be printed on?

Our historical maps and surname histories are printed on specialist parchment paper which has a beige tint.


Orders and Shipping

How long would it take for my order to get shipped?

It will take up to 14 days for you to receive your product.

Can I change my order after I have placed it?

We're sorry but you can't change your map after it's been ordered as it goes straight to the printers.

Why my order has not arrived yet?

Your order should be with you within 14 days. If it's been longer than 14 days then we are very sorry, please get in touch with us and one of the team will track your order for you.

How do I cancel my order?

You can only cancel your order within 12 hours of placing it, please get in touch.

My order arrived damaged

Where do we get our information on historic surnames?

Where do the coat of arms come from?

The coat of arms we offer are derived from authentic heraldic records. These records are meticulously researched from historical archives, heraldic registries, and ancestral documents. We strive to ensure that the coats of arms we provide are historically accurate and reflect the true heritage associated with your surname.

Does every name have a coat of arms?

Not every surname has a coat of arms. Coats of arms were historically granted to individuals, not families, and were often associated with nobility or notable achievements. While many surnames have a corresponding coat of arms, some may not. If your surname does not have an associated coat of arms, it may be due to the lack of historical records or the name not having been granted one.

Why is there no motto on my coat of arms?

Not all coats of arms include a motto. Mottos were typically personal choices and were not always a standard part of a coat of arms. If your coat of arms does not have a motto, it may be because the original bearer of the arms did not include one. Mottos can also vary significantly even within the same family, depending on the branch or individual preferences.

So is this my family tree?

While our historic surname and coat of arms products provide valuable insights into your family history, they are not comprehensive family trees. Our products offer a glimpse into the heritage and lineage associated with your surname, but constructing a detailed family tree would require more extensive genealogical research. For a complete family tree, we recommend consulting with a professional genealogist.

Why don't you have my name?

If you cannot find your surname on our website, it may be due to several reasons. Some surnames may not have historical records or coats of arms associated with them, especially if they are relatively modern or uncommon. Additionally, our database is continually being updated, so it's possible that your surname has not been added yet. If you have specific inquiries, please contact us, and we'll do our best to assist you.
